HOW DOES FUNDAMENTALISM MANIFEST ITSELF IN OUR CULTURE TODAY?
By declaring America a Christian nation, which a claim with no basis in the Constitution or the founding record.
Conflating religious conviction with American patriotism—and branding all who disagree as enemies of both.
Advancing legislative agendas that establish biblical principles as the foundation of federal governance.
Claiming “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance as a patriotic truth—it was added in 1954 and so has never belonged there.
Convening evangelical prayer meetings in the White House—the people’s house, not the church’s.
Mandating biblical instruction in public schools, where the state’s obligation is to educate, not to evangelize.
Preaching partisan politics from the pulpit while collecting tax exemptions funded by all Americans.
Imposing religious doctrine as civil law, which replaces constitutional governance with theological authority.
Raiding and pillaging public libraries of books that challenge fundamentalist doctrine.
Purging Deism from the military’s list of recognized faiths, which erases the tradition of Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Thomas Paine, and Benjamin Franklin.
Elevating leaders who invoke religious authority while demonstrating no fidelity to the values they claim to champion.

What can you do today to make an impact?
Educate yourself. Vote in every election, from school board to President of the United States.
Question every candidate: does the Constitution or religious doctrine come first?
Unite gay rights, women’s rights, voting rights, equal rights, library rights, and abortion rights under one flag: Constitutional rights.
Express gratitude to the believers and non-believers who stand for separation of church and state.
Run for your school board.
Join library and textbook selection committees.
Oppose public funding for religious charter schools.
Defend science education from fundamentalist godzilla’s interference in public schools and curricula.
Normalize asking every candidate for public office or judgeship where their primary loyalty lies—to the Constitution or to their faith.
Demand that Congress fund science free from religious or political interference.
Show up! From booth on campus to tables at public gatherings to simply being a presence in your community.
Use social media wisely. Organize, share, and speak.
Acquire radio and television platforms that champion secular democracy.
Put secularism on billboards.
And NO WHINING!
